Indiana.

Notes for Jacob Honn: Information provided by Betty Odle Ramsey and Mildred Carter Hunt. Jacob is listed in the 1860 census for Owen County, Indiana.

Jacob made a claim against the estate of Daniel K. Smith in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri for $50 he loaned Daniel for his "September journey" 18-- from North Carolina to Missouri and 3 bushels of corn he sold to Daniel in 1807. Records state he was a resident of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. He signed a receipt in 1810 and no further record has been found for him in Missouri.

By following the children's birthplaces we can follow Jacobs movements. The two eldest sons list their birthplace as Louisiana or Missouri on Census Records. The third son gives his birthplace as North Carolina and Missouri. Jacob purchased land in Washington County, Indiana on 24 May 1815. In the mid-1830's they moved into Lafayette Township, Owen County, Indiana, where they lived the rest of their lives. If Jacob returned to Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1812 they did not resume membership at Zion Lutheran Church, since no records appear there for them.

Jacob and Mary appear on the 1860 census, Owen County, Indiana. In 1863, Mary was living with her son, Jesse. She was still living with Jesse on the 1870 census. This is verified by an old letter written by Mary to her son Daniel.

      112.  Jesse5 Honn (Jacob4, Johann Jacob3 Hahn, Johannes Jacob2 Hawn, Johann Jacob1 Hahn) was born 14 Jul 1827 in Washington County, Indiana, and died 02 Jan 1906 in Polk Township (Shelby County) Iowa.  He married Matilda Fiscus 12 Apr 1849 in Owen County, Indiana, daughter of John Fiscus and Mary Fulk.  She was born 14 Sep 1823 in Washington County, Indiana, and died 1915 in Shelby County, Iowa.

Notes for Jesse Honn: Information provided by Betty Odle Ramsey and Wilma Van Gordon. They resided in Owen County, Indiana after their marriage, in 1872 lived in Marshall County, Iowa, in 1873 in Shelby County, Iowa (Polk Township), then in 1877 they returned to Owen County, Indiana. They lived there many years before returning to Shelby County, Iowa, where they remained until their deaths.

In a letter dated September 12, 1980 from Harriet Hoffman to Mrs. Scherman, she writes, "I was asked by my Aunt Hattie (Fulk) Childress to write you in answer to your request in the Owen County Leader. My Aunt's grandmother was Mary (Polly) Hon. She was a sister to the Jesse Honn you asked about in the paper, we think. Jesse Hon who was a brother to my greatgrandmother and Aunt Hattie's grandmother left Indiana and settled in around Harlan, Iowa. I think in the early part of the 1900's. Jesse Honn married Matilda Fiscus b. 9/14/1823  d. 1915. Our Jesse was born 1828 and died after 1866. They had 5 children that we have record on. We have no record where Jesse Hon's parents are buried. We only have the one brother for our Mary Hon. Since the early papers for Owen Count were done away with, 6 court order was left in a will to distroy all the papers. There is no way we can find out anything else. If some family member has some records in a bible. This would help. Our gr-grandmother Mary Hon married John Lewis Fulk b 5/5/1825 d 7/19/1858. He was born in North Carolina, mrd in Owen co., mrd in 1845. They had 6 children 4 boys and 2 girls Louise, Andrew (my grandfather), Sarah Jane, Henderson, Simon Peter, and George Washington Fulk. After John died Mary (Polly) Honn Fulk mrd. John Henry Rawley and had 3 more children. Tilman, Perry and Howard Rawley."

page. 543: Jesse Hon, a native of Washington County, Indiana was born July 14, 1827 and is a son of Jacob and Mary (Lawrence) Hon, natives of North Carolina. When he was five years old his parents removed to Owen County, Indiana; here he was placed on a farm and attended subscription schools, which afforded him only a limited education; being a close observer, however, he has acquired an amount of information equal to that of many who have enjoyed superior advantages. Most of his early life was spent in clearing up the timbered land of his native State. Mr. Hon was married April 12, 1849 to Miss Matilda Fiscus, a daughter of Frederick and Mary Magdalena Fiscus, natives of North Carolina. Mrs. Hon was born in Washington County, Indiana, September 14, 1823. They are the patents of two children living. Nelson, residing in Polk Township on the old homestead and Mary Rosella, wife of of Albert W. Mitten, also residing in Polk Township. In 1872, Mr. Hon came to Marshall County, Iowa and remained there one winter; in the spring of 1873 they came to Shelby County and settled in Section 23, Polk Township, on a farm of 240 acres of partially improved land; here he has made many improvements in the way of erecting necessary buildings. After a residence of four years in Shelby County, Mr. and Mrs. Hon returned to Owen County, Indiana and remained there  four years, when they returned to Shelby County; here they have since made their home. Mr. Hon is a man that always takes an active interest in all enterprises tending toward advancement and improvement of the community in general. He is a strong Democrat, always casting his vote with his party. Mr. Hon devotes himself to farming and stock raising and finds a faithful helper in his most worthy wife. They are members of the Church of Christ.

Information from Hazel Vliet Knowlton, in a letter written to Daphne Ramsey.

Hazel wrote, " The Vliets (her grandparents) lived at Patricksburg, which is 12 miles west of Spencer and is merely a wide spot in the road. However, my Grandfather Vliet, who was a carpenter and builder, built the Methodist Church in that town and he almost thought he owned the church. He was Sunday School Supt., teacher of the Men's Bible Class, deacon, elder and what have you. He was a rabid Methodist to the day of his death. My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Honn Vliet, was a tall, slender person (slab-sided in Hoosier parlance) with a very severe countenance, but we grandchildren loved her dearly and we knew that that love was returned. She seldom smiled and her laugh was an explosive "HA". Her sister Lina (Rachel Perlina) and her brother William were also tall and dignified. I recall seeing grandmother at a Methodist love feast dressed in dead black with a very severe box turban on. She walked up and down the aisles, shaking hands with all of the other members, singing, "Shall We Gather at the River?". She always said she was born the day Queen Victoria ascended the throne, but the dates do not agree (b. 1832). Theirs was a serious household--not much fun or laughter; in fact, life was rather grim for them." W

Hazel later said the Vliets belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church before they "came over the mountain".
