Ms. Tiffany writes;

"Scattered at longer or shorter distances from Unthank, throughout the neighboring counties, were a score of Scottish households whose inmates were directly related to him (John Murray) or connected with him by marriage. Stewarts, Grahams, Pringles, Murrays, Bennets, Kerrs, Scotts, and others had quarreled and married, thriven and multiplied, until the population had become one vast cousinship, bound together by that clannish loyalty which, quite apart from pride of name, is ineradicable in the Scots to the present day."

Notes for James Murray:

James Murray emigrated to the Cape Fear region of North Carolina as a young Scot in 1736.  For the nest 29 years he was a moderately successful merchant, planter, and government official in the colony.  He was appointed to several minor offices almost as soon as he arrived in North Carolina.  By 1739 he was a member of the provincial council, of which he became president in 1754, and at various times, served as secretary and associate justice of the General Court.  His conflict with Governor Arthur Dobbs and disappointed hopes of himself becoming Chief Justice, moved him to quit the colony in 1765.  Murray joined relatives in Boston and remained there until 1776, spending the few remaining years of his life as a loyalist refugee in Nova Scotia. More information can be found in the work entitled 'Letters of James Murray, Loyalist' , edited by Nina Moore Tiffany, published in 1900 (currently out of print).  The majority of his papers, including the letters in the book, are in the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Elizabeth and Dorothy were the only children to survive (Dorothy was living in Boston with her Aunt Elizabeth and the family felt that was why she was able to survive the 'heat' of N. Carolina.

Notes for John Boyles Murray:

Immigrated to America, where he immediately entered the counting house of Clark & Nightingale in Providence, R. I., whose senior partner was his first cousin and had been brought up in his father's (Dr. John Murray's) family in Norwich-the leading physician there and founder of the Norwich Hospital. "At the outbreak of the Revolution, John B. Murray sided with the Colonies and joined the Providence Cadets, commanded by the 'junior member of the firm', Colonel Nightingale. This corps was summoned to march to Lexington when the news reached Providence of the intended seizure of that place by the British troops, but they heard of its capture and the return of the royal troops to Boston before they arrived. He subsequently served on the Quartermaster-General's staff under his friend, Colonel Ephraim Bowen, and was attached to the Marquis de LaFayette's command when he invaded Newport. He then received the appointment of Agent of Prizes and remained in Providence until the close of the Revolutionary War." (Autobiography of Col. J. B. Murray, p. 8)

In 1783 he formed a partnership with John P. Mumford and Oliver Bowen (brother of Col. Ephraim Bowen), and established two commercial houses, one in New York City and the other in Alexandria, Va., where he married Martha McClenachan. Occasionally he had charge of exporting the crops of the estate of General Washington (a few miles distant at Mt. Vernon), who, at times visited at his house, stopping in to take a cup of tea before riding homeward; when, as his mother afterwards told him, the General took her babe (James) on his lap.

In 1792, John B. Murray discontinued his Alexandria house and removed to New York City.

He went to the Free School in Norwich, England and aged 9 he "met with a severe fracture of the right leg, through a fall, which occasioned a settled and somewhat painful lameness". He was articled to a solicitor in Norwich (1785).

He co-operated with his brother, Dr. Thomas Archibald Murray, in organizing the Fever Institution in London and became its first secretary.

He seems to have been the first secretary and founder of the Law Association (Set 1817), established for the benefit of widows and families of professional men in the metropolis (i.e. London) and its vicinity.

In 1834, he moved to Sussex where the Earl of Egremont appointed him his law-agent and steward.

Notes for Col. James Boyles Murray:

James B. Murray was educated to enter Columbia College and was accepted in 1804, however, he became very ill and almost died which incapacitated him so he could not attend college. His father chose for him a commercial career. (From the autobiography of Col. J. B. Murray, p. 20)

In 1808, his uncle George W. Murray was drafted in the artillery to march to the Canadian line. As he had a family and was engaged in large business, James volunteered to take his place, and thus entered the artillery as a private. Service was of short duration, but sticking to his colors, he was soon elected a corporal. Sent in 1809 as supercargo in his father's coppered (then a rarity) ship, the Egeria, to Archangel, and having made a very profitable trip, he was at 21 (in 1810) admitted to the partnership. In 1811 he went to Washington to make himself acquainted with political affairs and their probable outcome.

In June 1812 war was declared against England. His regiment of artillery, the Ninth, in which he was now a 2d Lieutenant, volunteered unanimously, and in September was stationed at Fort Gansevoort on the Hudson River until January, 1813, when they were relieved and allowed to return to business. Meantime, the Egeria had been captured by the French in the Baltic and carried into Norway, but was finally liberated.

Sent to Denmark to look after the Egeria's cargo and the firm's interests, the Russian Minister at Washington made him a special bearer of dispatches relative to mediation by his Government with a view to peace.

Died in ship collision while sailing with her brother Hamilton aboard the Ville du Havre, 1873. There were 85 passengers and crew members who perished when their vessel was struck amidships by the sailing ship Loch Earn in the mid-Atlantic. Efforts to launch lifeboats were disrupted by the falling of the Loch Earn's masts on the deck of the Ville du Havre, which sank 12 minutes after the collision.

198          iv.   Hamilton Murray, born 11 Jul 1850 in Oswego, New York; died 22 Nov 1873.

Notes for Hamilton Murray:

Died in ship collision on Ville du Havre with his sister Martha in 1873. He was an excellent swimmer, however, his sister did not swim and it was reported that he remained with her rather than swimming to safety. They both drowned. Hamilton and Martha were sailing to recover from the deaths of both parents in one year when their ship was struck mid ship by the sailing ship "Loch Earn".

At 16 he was sent to Europe to complete college preparation. After two years @ University of Pennsylvania he transferred to Princeton where he graduated in 1872. His will, which was written the night before he embarked on his fatal voyage, left $20,000 to the Philadelphian Society of Princeton for the erection of an assembly hall and library to be used "for religious purposes only." The society, an offshoot of the Young Men's Christian Association, had been formed by a group of Princeton undergraduates in 1825 to promote religious activities both on and off campus. Murray Hall was completed in 1879 on the Princeton University campus. It was later known as Murray/Dodge Hall and still later Theatre Intime.

In the eulogy delivered by Rev. J. Winthrop Hagerman, Hamilton was widely respected for his "absolute fidelity to every trust, whether love or of obligation."
