Notes for John Murray, of Falahill (The Outlaw): B133

Upon his father's resignation, John Murray got a charter under the great seal from James IV in 1489; afterwards, in 1497, another charter dated 5 Nov 1497, including the lands of Cranston, Riddel, etc. and eventually, on his own resignation, a Charter, dated 10 Oct 1508, of half of the lands of Philiphaugh.

This chieftain, the celebrated 'Outlaw Murray', who with five hundred of his men, bid defiance to the King of Scotland, James IV, is immortalized in a beautiful ballad of the Scottish Border, "For ages", wrote Sir Walter Scott, "a popular song in Selkirkshire".  James IV was reduced to compromise with his rebellious subject by granting to him the heritable sheriffship of the shire of Selkirk. The office continued with his descendants until the government acquired all the Scot's heritable jurisdictions in 1748. He was High Sheriff of Selkirkshire 1509, married Janet Forrester, widow of Knochhill; killed in1510. (In Burke's Commoners it is recorded that he married Lady Margaret Hepburn, daughter of Patrick, 1st Earl of Bothwell and Lady Janet Douglas Murray of Stanhope.  She was the great-granddaughter of King James I.)  He had two sons and three daughters.  Died in the early part of the reign of James V. Succeeded by his eldest son, James Murray, of Falahill.
